Greening at Island House
In 2008-09, we developed new environmentally friendly policies and protocols to help us become more green. We worked with the London Metropolitan University to produce a GREENING MANUAL which we made available to other local voluntary sector organisations to try to spread the greening message.
In 2009-10, the Island House rear garden was redeveloped, creating a designated, safe play area for toddlers, a patio and barbeque area, a wicker den and new storage sheds. This involved installing a new child friendly fire escape, a new water play and sand pit, climbing frame with slide and fruit/herb planting beds. Thanks to IDCF and LBTH Early Years for Capital grants that helped make this possible.
In 2010-11, we commissioned a greening survey to investigate possible ways we could improve our energy efficiency and then invested in making some significant improvements. This included Veolia Environmental Services funding new double glazing throughout Island House, introducing water meters and water saving measures, new energy saving timer clocks on our water heating system and more energy efficient lighting.
In 2011-12 Island House worked with ELBA to help create a more healthy and environmentally friendly working environment for our staff and users. This included creating a secure cycle park area and purchasing a Staff Bike, which is available to anyone at Island House for any journey, to help reduce dependence on motorised transport.
Our CanDo projects also encourage ACTIVE TRANSPORT and we have helped volunteers set up numerous new walking clubs and cycling projects around the local community.
