Island House is a community resource providing space and support to local
voluntary organizations (in particular an Advice Centre, Pre School Playgroup
and Bangladeshi Cultural Association), and running a range of education, health
and social welfare projects for adults and young people. Approximately 250
people are welcomed to Island House every week. Our projects are focused in four
key thematic areas – adult training, public health, inter-faith dialogue and
youth & family support. Island House has been successful at developing new
partnerships in order to increase the sustainability in the four thematic areas.
Our current areas of work include:
·
Adult
training
- Island House is working with Tower
Hamlets Lifelong Learning, Job Center Plus and the Career Development Group
(CDG) to provide access to basic skills, job search, CV development and work
placement. After a year of working in partnership we are now formalizing these
relationships.
·
Public
Health –
Island House has a contract with
Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust and is co-ordinating the boroughs Expert
Patient Programme, a self management project for 120 people living with long
term health conditions.
·
Youth and
Family –
Island House has developed a
programme based around youth leadership. We have been awarded with a three-year
contract from UK Youth to support children and staff in developing portfolios
for the nationally recognized Youth Achievement Awards.
·
Inter-faith
dialogue –
Island House has become one of the
centres piloting work for Save the Children’s ‘Diversity and Dialogue’
programme, bringing together Christian and Muslim children to explore
issues of identity through art.
Island House’s strength is in our capacity to act as a hub, maximizing
the impact of constituent projects and partnerships by encouraging communication
and cross-fertilization. We aim to realize this potential by:
·
Providing quality services and
facilities
·
Working in partnership with local voluntary
organizations and the public sector
·
Supporting the development of new projects
where need is identified
·
Encouraging user participation in development
and management
·
Facilitating communication between users and
local organisations
·
Undertaking regular monitoring and
evaluation
